Research focus and environment:

One postdoctoral scholar position is immediately available in the Ling lab in the Horae Gene Therapy Center (GTC) at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan). The GTC, consisting of investigators from different departments at UMass Chan and research expertise, provides a highly dynamic and collaborative environment, with a common goal of developing translational gene therapies for diseases with no other treatments.

The Ling lab focuses on developing gene therapies for mitochondrial diseases, which pose special challenges due to their two-genome complexity. There are about 1000 proteins in mitochondria, and 13 of them are encoded in the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA), while the rest are transcribed and translated from the nuclear genome (nDNA). We are currently developing gene editing therapy for genes encoded in the mtDNA, and gene replacement therapy for the ones from nDNA. The focus of the research includes 1) design and develop translatable gene therapy approaches using both in vitro and in vivo systems, leading to investigational new drug (IND)-enabling studies; 2) develop regulatory elements to fine-tune the efficacy and safety of gene therapy for mitochondrial diseases. For more information about the investigator, please visit https://profiles.umassmed.edu/display/47858600.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related biological/biomedical science.
  • Highly motivated to apply skills towards solving molecular/biological problems.
  • Excellent experimental and analytical skills, and careful research-record keeping.
  • Good written and verbal communication/presentation skills.
  • Prior research experience in the following areas, including molecular biology, molecular physiology, and metabolic disease biology, is highly desirable.

Career development:

The Ling lab values collaboration and personal growth. We work with you to tailor your training to meet your career goal, either being academia or industry, while you contribute to the growth of the lab. The goal of the Ling lab is to use our knowledge and passion 1) to impact young scientists as you choose our lab as one stop of your journey; 2) to find the hope for families with mitochondrial diseases.

As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences, prospectives, and backgrounds.
